Tempe, Ahwatukee, Chandler, AZ Community

Every March, Tempe, Arizona, gets a little more green. Whether you grew up celebrating St. Patrick’s Day or you’re just looking for a reason to get out and have a good time, Tempe delivers one of the most energetic and welcoming holiday scenes in the Valley.

From lively bar crawls along Mill Avenue to family-friendly events nearby, there’s a lot going on for locals and visitors alike.

Who Was St. Patrick, Really?

Before the green beer and shamrock decorations, there was a real person behind the holiday. St. Patrick was a 5th-century missionary born in Roman Britain. At just 16 years old, he was kidnapped and taken to Ireland as a slave. He eventually escaped, returned to Britain, and went on to become a bishop. Around 432 CE, he returned to Ireland to spread Christianity, converting thousands across the country.

He reportedly died on March 17, which is why the date became his feast day. Over the centuries, that feast day evolved from a religious observance in Ireland into a global cultural celebration.

The Symbols You’ll See Everywhere

St. Patrick’s Day has a handful of instantly recognizable symbols. Here’s what they actually mean:

  • Shamrock: According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Christian Holy Trinity to the Irish people. It later became Ireland’s national symbol.

  • Green: Green is tied to Ireland’s landscape, its nickname “The Emerald Isle,” and Irish nationalism. It’s also why everyone wears green on March 17.

  • Leprechauns: These come from Irish folklore. They’re traditionally depicted as small, mischievous cobblers who guard pots of gold.

  • Celtic harp: A symbol of ancient Irish culture and one of the oldest national emblems in Europe.

  • Celtic cross: Legend has it that St. Patrick combined the Christian cross with the Celtic sun symbol to help connect new beliefs to existing Irish traditions.
